Matt’s Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in Mile End funded by Arts Council England and other major trusts and foundations. We are pleased to announce the next Stanley Picker Internship at Matt’s Gallery. Now in its third year this bursaried internship will run from January 2010 to June 2010.

The first two months of the programme will introduce a broad range of administrative tasks within the gallery. This will involve working closely with the director and three gallery managers on a range of projects including exhibitions, education, fundraising and general gallery management. At the end of the first phase there will be a review with the Director and Gallery Manager Managers. This discussion will look at progress to date and establish the intern’s area of focus for the remainder of the internship. A plan of work for the remaining four months of the internship will be agreed with the gallery director and managers.

This is an opportunity for a recent graduate or postgraduate to gain valuable experience working as part of the gallery team. The internship is offered on a part-time basis for 6 months (two days per week). A bursary of £2,000 will be paid over the course of the internship, the equivalent of approximately £40 per day. Nicola Dove’s work at the Pavilion

Pavilion will be showing Observance a series of long exposure portraits of people from a wide spectrum of faiths in a meditative state of prayer. The work explores whether this internal experience can be recorded and communicated via a photographic medium.

Gursharan_Sikh_UK-web-

Long exposures hark back to the beginnings of photography, when film was slow and shutter-speeds long. It was the time of spirit photography, where it was commonly believed that a photograph could capture one’s soul, or communicate with the dead. The portraits also make reference to the strict visual parameters employd in religious icon painting, where the frontality of the figure brings the viewer into direct relationship to the subject.

The exhibition will run from 26 November – 15 January. The exhibition opeing will take place 26 November, 6 - 8pm. RSVP to gill@pavilion.org.uk

ArtWash

ArtWash is an Oxford based artist led platform in a working laundrette. The non-conventional space of a launderette provides a site-specific venue for contemporary arts.

ArtWash was developed in 2003, offering an opportunity for artists to show work to an audience and giving a platform for completed work and work in progress. On a non-profit basis.

ArtWash is moving into it’s next stage of development and is now led and co-curated by Barry Reeves, Ann Rapstoff and Kay Sentance who are expanding the monthly showcases into a national and international exchange between artists across disciplines.

ArtWash is working towards a stronger presence in non -conventional spaces as well as a long-term programming schedule. We would like to develop as an exchange base for national and international artists wishing to explore and show work in non-conventional spaces.
